Before you go in the water:

  1. Never go in alone.
  2. Check the bathing conditions in advance. If needed, check badevand.dk to see if there is a "red flag".
  3. Lay out your bathrobe or other clothing and any towel so they're easy to reach when you get out of the water again.

While you are in the water:

  1. Breathe slowly and calmly, and listen to your body.
  2. Look out for each other and smile.
  3. Stay close to the steps or bathing jetty, especially when there are waves or wind.

After you get out of the water:

  1. Dry yourself with a towel. Some people like to leave water on the skin — in that case, make sure your robe can absorb water, i.e., that it has cotton terry towelling on the inside.
  2. Put on windproof clothing that is quick and easy to get on, e.g., a bathrobe or a jumpsuit. It's not the water that makes you cold afterwards — it's the wind. Windproof clothing is the key, as it helps you retain your body's heat.
  3. Stand on something that insulates against the cold ground, e.g., a foot mat or a small towel, so you avoid your feet becoming unnecessarily cold. They can take a very long time to warm up again. Alternatively, wear water shoes throughout the bathing session. They should be easy to put on and take off, even with cold fingers. Speaking of hands, it can be a very good idea to use neoprene gloves in the really cold months, since both feet and hands are often the parts that stay cold after a chilly dip.
  4. Enjoy the increased blood flow and the renewed energy in your body. Breathe and smile — it's almost inevitable when every cell in your body has had a good cold boost.
