We have gathered 10 helpful bathing tips to inspire you when you want to start winter swimming this season but aren’t sure what’s important.
These 10 tips are also great to revisit if you’re an experienced winter swimmer.
Our bathing advice is also about making the bathing experience even better — both before and after the dip. In addition, the tips are essential for your safety.
Have a great swim in the sea or lake :)
Before you go in the water:
- Never swim alone.
- Check the bathing conditions in advance. You can check badevand.dk for a “red flag”.
- Lay out your bathrobe or other clothes and, if needed, a towel so they are easy to reach when you get out of the water.

While you are in the water:
- Breathe slowly and calmly, and tune into your body.
- Keep an eye on each other and smile.
- Stay close to the ladder or bathing jetty, especially when there are waves or wind.
When you have come out of the water:
- Dry yourself with a towel. Some people like to leave water on their skin — if so, make sure your robe can absorb water, i.e., that it has cotton terry on the inside.
- Put on windproof clothing that’s quick and easy to get on, e.g., a bathrobe or a jumpsuit. It’s not the water that makes you cold afterwards — it’s the wind. Windproof clothing is key because it helps you retain your body’s heat.
- Stand on something that insulates from the cold ground, e.g., a foot mat or a small towel, so your feet don’t get unnecessarily cold. They can take a very long time to warm up again. Or wear water shoes throughout the bathing session. They should be easy to take off and put on, even with cold fingers. Speaking of hands, it can be a very good idea to use neoprene gloves in the really cold months, since both feet and hands are often the areas that stay cold the longest after a dip.
- Enjoy the increased circulation and renewed energy in your body. Breathe and smile — it’s almost unavoidable when every cell in your body has had a good cold boost.
