SUP changing on the beach: Change easily, stay warm and hassle-free
Changing for SUP on the beach can be the difference between a calm, enjoyable outing on the water – and a change that’s a bit too cold and awkward in wind and sand.
For those who love stand up paddle, the sea and the feeling of calm, the trip isn’t just about time on the board. It’s also about everything around it: getting into your clothes properly, staying warm and coming ashore softly after being in the water.
SUP changing before and after the trip
When you change on the beach before SUP, it’s a good idea to think of it as a small routine. Have your swimwear ready, put your dry clothes on top of the bag, and preferably choose a spot with some shelter if the wind bites off the sea.
A swim poncho makes it much easier to change without struggling with a towel that blows away. You get a bit of privacy and a calmer transition from everyday clothes to water clothes – or back again after the trip.
Our swim ponchos are made from soft 100% cotton terry and have plenty of room so you can easily change clothes under the poncho.
Danish weather and chilly changes
Danish weather can change quickly. A calm morning can turn into a windy beach outing, and even on mild days the body can cool down when wet clothes meet the wind.
That’s why it’s a good idea to plan the trip before you head out. Think about what you’ll wear before, during and after – especially in spring, autumn and the colder months.
For SUP in Denmark you should always consider wind, current and water temperature. Use appropriate waterwear for the season, and make sure you have safety covered with a buoyancy aid or life jacket, a leash and a clear agreement on route and time.
Safe SUP in Denmark
SUP feels peaceful when the board glides smoothly over the water, but wind, current and cold can quickly change the experience. Start in calm water close to the shore, and take your first trips with others or through an introductory course.
Respect the weather and the water. Avoid strong winds, fog, thunder and strong currents, and rather turn back in good time. The most important thing is that the trip feels safe – both on the way out and on the way back.
If you combine SUP and winter swimming, keep it short and controlled. The cold shock can feel refreshing and grounding, but the cold should always be adapted to experience, weather and how you feel that day.
How to keep warm after stand up paddle
After the trip it’s nice to have a fixed order: board on land, wet clothes off, body dried, warm clothes on. The less you have to search through the bag, the more comfortable the change will be.
Have a towel, dry underwear and warm clothes ready before you go on the water. Breathe calmly when you come up, and give your body time to find warmth again.
The swim ponchos at Nordbaek are designed in two lengths and are made from water-absorbing 100% cotton terry. They reach to the knee and are easy to change under after a trip on the water.
When changing feels easy, warm and safe, there’s more room for what you came for: the sea, the calm, the balance and the fresh feeling in your body after a paddle.Enjoy your time on the board,
Nordbaek
