It doesn't just lift your mood. Winter swimming also activates the body's brown fat, which helps boost metabolism, says Susanna Søberg, who among other things has written the book "Hop i havet" about the popular phenomenon.
The cold may have released its grip on the country, but here on Esrum Sø thick sheets of ice still lie among the reeds and young swans. Susanna Søberg lowers her body into the cold water.
"The first time I winter bathed, I didn't get the endorphin rush I had expected. It got better the second time. But I wasn't hooked until I'd been out three or four times. Then I understood it and suddenly I was all in," notes Susanna Søberg, who — like many other Danes — has a regular routine of bathing in the country's seas or lakes year-round.
