This is a photo of one of our very first robes, from the first production in 2017. The whole idea behind the NORDBAEK robe was that we wanted to design a robe that would specifically cater to the winter swimmer's needs, since we are active winter swimmers ourselves. The original NORBDAEK robe with fleece on the inside and anthracite-grey quilting was the first we created.
It had to be windproof and wonderfully soft and warm. In addition, it should not weigh very much. The NORDBAEK robe had to be easy to wrap around in an instant, which gave us the idea of using magnets that can fasten the robe in a snap, even with cold fingers. Nothing on the robe should be tight or cumbersome.
Furthermore, the NORDBAEK robe needed to differentiate itself from other bathrobes and dressing gowns precisely through its specially designed material, which is soft fleece on the inside and a thin, lightweight windproof material on the outside. It should have its own luxurious character so that you could always recognize a NORDBAEK from a distance. We wanted to show that you can be practical and warmly dressed and at the same time look extremely neat and well put together. So you could easily pop into the bakery on the way home.
The windproofing in the NORDBAEK robe is a whole chapter in itself, and it’s exactly what makes it so special and brilliant, even if you choose to sit with your friend after the cold dip with hot coffee in a thermos. We wanted to make a robe that was comfortably warm in all kinds of weather, even when the wind is strong — as it is in Denmark.
Year-round swimmers, winter swimmers and even ice swimmers have all taken notice of the NORDBAEK robe because it helps retain the body’s own heat in all the conditions you meet at the sea. When you jump into the water year-round, the body experiences a shock, releases endorphins, and cools down. In winter this cooling is quite drastic, and in summer it happens more slowly. But what is the same in both situations is that the body begins to produce its own heat as soon as it is cooled. At that point it is not enough to put on a normal bathrobe or dressing gown, because it is not windproof.
Most people fall for the joys of winter swimming and can feel the energy you get after a dip in the cold thrill. But few enjoy freezing afterwards and are well familiar with the feeling of the wind cutting right through to the bone. You know the good energy you get from jumping into the cold thrill :) But on windy days, you probably also know the feeling of the wind going straight through to your bones.
We are proud that the NORDBAEK robe has found its place with so many winter swimmers, who now see their robe as their best companion by the sea, second only to their friend, of course.
